It is a secret to which he believes that most people will either cannot and will not hear. And as the story progresses, we learn that his immersion in the wilderness has fundamentally changed him.Living deep in the woods of Congo, among ‘savages’ and cut off from the outside world, Kurtz has learned some deep, dark secrets about the ‘true’ nature of life. At the beginning of the novel, Kurtz’s character has been a great mystery to Marlow and everyone else. And as one of those readers, I could only come to the conclusion that he was referring to the horror being a form of emptiness, a profound nothingness that lies at the heart of everything. With Kurtz’ dying words being “The horror! The horror! ” the readers are left with the question as to what he meant by that statement.
